Up to 5,000 people filled Bedford Row on Sunday evening as Limerick’s Christmas lights were officially switched to mark the beginning of the festive season in the city.
Despite the wet and windy conditions, those who braved the elements were treated to performances by the Limerick Rhythm Band, Shannon Gospel Choir and The Voice finalist Niall O’Halloran.
But it was Santa Claus that stole the show, making a surprise visit Shannon-side, much to the delight of onlooking children.
Descending from the roof of Bank of Ireland’s O’Connell St branch, Father Christmas has a message for all the young children of Limerick.
“My elves have worked very hard to get me here tonight. I have received a lot of letters from children in Limerick but there are still a lot to come”, said Santa.
“My message for all the children of Limerick is don’t be naughty, be nice and be good for all your mammies and daddies”, he said.
