Local Artists Showcase Diverse Creations in The Limerick Show

Ormston House’s new exhibition, The Limerick Show, will come to Limerick City on November 28 at 7 p.m. The Limerick Show is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland, Limerick City and County Council, and The Limerick Arts Office. Artists from all over the county have entered the show with their works, ranging from paintings and sculptures to photography and video.

This will be the 2nd Limerick Show to take place at The Ormston House, with the first exhibition taking place back in 2022. The goal is to help artists get their work out there for the public to see and to create a forum for critical conversation in response to visual art. 39 artists from Limerick produced many forms of artistic creations and their work will be present at The Ormston House from November 28 to February 1.

A Celebration of Limerick’s Creative Diversity

This edition of The Limerick Show features no specific theme, but there are some recurring subjects that appear throughout. Some of the art deals with the cycles of life like youth, childhood, and death. Notably, this show features one posthumous entry: a selection of portraits dating from the late 1980s. Allusions to specific locations anchor much of this work in the unique topography of Limerick, especially the River Shannon. Shells, molluscs, and hybrid animals and entities appear in several submissions.

Melissa Appleton, a curator and co-director of Peak Cymru, an art organisation that creates time, space and resources for young people, artists, curators and communities to make, experiment and collaborate on various art projects, assisted in selecting the artworks for the show. Appleton was chosen for her expertise in bridging local and global perspectives in art exhibitions.

Exploring Connections Between Art, Identity, and Place

Appleton talked about the selection process, saying, that it was interesting to glean insights into what is happening in this part of Ireland: “It’s a joy to be immersed in the work of Limerick-based artists. Many of the themes here resonate with my rurally-based practice in the Welsh Borders. This rooted, yet far-reaching, exhibition is a conversation between humans, more-than-humans, and fantastical beings, in communion with place, history, nature, and imagination. I can’t wait to see them all come together at Ormston House.”
