The 2023 Hip-Hop and Street Dance Outreach Programme will take place across Limerick City on Saturday 1st of April
By James Hanly
A day of Breakdance & Hip-Hop, Rapping, Graffiti, and DJing workshops will be taking place in indoor and outdoor locations around Limerick City this weekend. The day will wrap up with an over 18’s Social Gathering at The Commercial bar.
Top 8 has held many successful events for the last decade but this will mark the beginning of a new programme of Hip-Hop and Street Dance starting with a day and night of free events. This will be the first, followed by similar events held in Cork, Belfast, and Dublin.
Top8 invites any curious person to attend if they’re novices, keen practitioners or established artists.
Internationally acclaimed dancer, Tobi Omoteso has spoken about his excitement for the programme:
“This will give everyone access to amazing artists from all the elements of Hip-Hop culture … a culture which has incredible potential to better the lives of our local and national communities.”
This event will see Top 8 partnering with a diverse group of artists and collectives.
The day will begin with a Street Dance workshop that will give an introduction to Hip-Hop culture, held in the Irish Aerial Creation Centre at 12pm.
Next, a Rap & MC Workshop will give attendees the opportunity to learn about the art of writing, rhyming and flow. This takes place at 2pm in Dry Lane Studios. A recorded session from MC Cypher with invited Limerick MCs will also premiere on Native TV.
A DJ workshop will then offer the chance to learn about the art form of Disc Jockeying from a leading turntablist. This event has a limited capacity of just 5 people so booking is required, taking place at 2pm in Dry Lane Studios also.
Throughout the afternoon, Limerick-based graffiti and street artists will be painting live murals, outdoors in the heart of Limerick city at Arthurs Quay. No booking is required.
The day will end with an Over 18’s Social Gathering in The Rec Room at The Commercial, from 10pm. This event will be hosted by leading Irish DJ, Limerick’s Ciara O’Callaghan.
Top8 co-founder and dancer, Deborah O’Connor, says: “This is going to be a great day in Limerick … giving the people of Limerick a great variety of ways to find out more about Hip-Hop – and all for free.”
