Councillor Peter Doyle (Fine Gael) put forward a motion to “penalize students” who are parking in residential zones
The motion put forward by Councillor Doyle asks wardens to drive around residential areas to fine students who are parking illegally parking around University of Limerick’s campus.
UL Student Life released a statement today, October 14, labelling it “unfair” to punish students with fines for illegal parking rather than finding a long-term solution to the lack of available parking within the college. They are thanking the councillors who voted against this motion.
Many students are commuting daily to attend their classes. With some travelling over two hours daily, from diverse parts of the country.
“Instead of assigning the blame, UL Student Life calls for a collaborative effort to address the root causes of these challenges and to ensure that the student perspective is better understood.” reads the statement posted on Instagram earlier today.
They are acknowledging the fact that it is a problem both for students and residents of the areas around the University of Limerick, such as Elm Park, Milford Grange and Hazelwood.
UL Student Life points out that students are parking in residential areas because of the lack of parking both for commuters and for those who are living on campus.
Ronan Cahill, President of UL Student Life, discussed this issue with Minister Patrick O’Donovan TD. He urges that the University of Limerick needs more infrastructure, including parking.
They are calling councillors to work with them on these issues in Castletroy and the University
