On Thursday, February 2, Dolan’s upstairs venue was shaking with excitement and music as attendees danced like their lives depended on it to Lloyd John and supporting acts.
The lineup for the night was local performer Abe Soare, last minute addition of local band King Fishr and the main man himself; the lovely Lloyd John, whose track ‘Alive’ has amassed 1.6 million streams on Spotify since its 2019 release.
The first act was Abe, sporting a vibrant red jacket, who got the crowd hyped for the night ahead with their popular new release ‘Oasis’ and a sing-along of ‘The End of the Cornetto’. Next was local folk band Kingfishr, who began with the soon-to-be-released ‘Heart in the Water’. They also played a brand new song, ‘Highlights’, live for the first time – impressing the crowd with a tight and natural performance.
Once the support slots were wrapped, Lloyd appeared and created a meticulous setup for the rest of the gig, bringing his keyboard forward, setting up his equipment, and disappearing again. His band members then took their positions and begin playing, with Lloyd rushing the stage and diving straight in. He had taken off his glasses and put a leather jacket over his black-and-white print shirt. He also donned sparkling drop-styled earrings and a pearl necklace, polishing off his whole look.
Lloyd kicked off his set with fan favourite ‘Fight Anymore’, jumping into the crowd with fans and could be seen jamming with support act Abe. He then went on to play his viral song, ‘Alive’.
Known as an emotional performer, he throws everything he has into his performances and loyal fans matched his energy for every number.
Lloyd later slowed down the set for a few songs, which allowed him to show off his amazing vocals and versatility as he switched from keys to guitar like it was second nature. However, the crowd were quickly back to moshing and an upbeat, rock concert energy, with everyone dancing along to ‘Over You’.
Once the artist had left the stage after finishing his set, a traditional chorus of “one more tune” rang out. Having sung all of his works, it was thought the artist would repeat a number. Instead, he surprised the crowd by belting out ‘Since You’ve Been Gone’ by Kelly Clarkson.
The venue was buzzing after the show; Lloyd hugged attendees and groups of fans sang their favourite number as they filed out onto the street.
