Limerick Voices from abroad: Brian Glynn

Every Saturday, Limerick Voice reporter, Siobhan Comyns, speaks to Limerick natives who have emigrated.

Name? Brian Glynn.

From? Drombanna, Limerick.

Now living in? San Francisco, USA.

Brian and his wife, Sarah.

When did you leave Ireland and why?

I left Ireland in 2009 after graduating from UL.  I originally came to SanFrancisco on a two-year contract with Enterprise Ireland and I stayed on.

Where did you study?

I studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Limerick.

Describe your job.

After working with Enterprise Ireland for two years, I got a job with Invest Northern Ireland where I worked for approximately six years.  I now work with a start-up insurance technology company called Trov.  I have never worked directly in engineering but would say that when working with companies who are selling technical products, having an engineering background is very useful.

What is living in San Francisco like?

When I first moved to San Francisco I lived all over the Bay area and in downtown San Francisco.  I now live in Walnut Creek, a town of approximately 50,000 people.  It’s located 30 miles east of San Francisco.  It’s a commuter town with a vibrant downtown area.  Ambitious people from all over the world live here.  There is a great energy – everyone is working on “the next best thing”.

Do you have any advice for someone interested in working abroad?

If you do decide to move abroad, throw yourself into it, two feet first.  Be open to trying new things.  You will have the opportunity to meet people and do things that you would not have otherwise.  There is a great network of Irish people all over the world – I play hurling with the GAA club here (St. Joseph’s Hurling Club).  It’s great to have an Irish community when you are living so far from home.

What do you miss most about Limerick?

I miss my immediate family hugely, also my broader extended family and my friends.  The cold winter nights in Thomond Park and the warm summer days in the Gaelic Grounds.
