Una Breen showcases her new batch of paintings in latest exhibition
Acclaimed Limerick artist Una Breen and Pauline O’Brien launched the art exhibition last night, Thursday, March 20 at 7 pm at the Treaty City Brewery.
Una’s paintings draw many inspirations from the different parts of the world, from goats in the Burren to snowy, beautiful forests and of course, the sea and its beautiful waves and those who explore them. Una has been painting for many years since childhood and her latest collection features many forms of art and colour, from acrylic paint to oil paintings.
Painting has been a huge factor in Una’s life since childhood and has continued to this day. She is a graduate of Limerick School of Art and Design (LSAD) and was an art teacher, teaching special needs children.
When asked about the overall theme of the exhibition, Una explains; ‘’There is no real theme here. It’s just about happiness and painting is about being happy. Everyone can interpret things in whatever way they like. I’ve been painting since I was a baby, and it is just my happy place.’’
While other painters and artists hit a block, Una worked hard at her paintings every day and said these paintings were painted in just a few days, leading to her house being full of paintings ready to be sent out into the world. “I have exhibitions when the house is full of paintings. Some people treasure their paintings. For me, it’s time to get them out of here,” she says.
While painting is one of her favourite pastimes, Una was a teacher and was teaching special needs children during her time as an art teacher. Una has been retired since she was 72 after breaking her knee and she has missed the job ever since: “I really miss the children. Sometimes we would draw things just to get something out of their heads. Painting is good for everything. Really good.”
The Treaty City Brewery has launched many exhibitions in the past and Una mentioned the Brewery is “very good” for launching exhibitions and can be a great location for local artists to showcase their own works of art.
The exhibition will run for the next two weeks until April 3 at The Treaty City Brewery in Limerick City.
