Cancellation of Non-Urgent Outpatient Clinics at UHL & Some Elective Surgery at St. John’s Extended Until Wednesday

UL hospital’s Group has cancelled non-urgent outpatient clinics at the University Hospital Limerick (UHL) and some elective surgeries in St.John’s hospital Limerick until tomorrow, Wednesday the 20th of October.

There were 52 Covid-19 positive cases reported at the hospital since yesterday, Monday the 18th of October, six of which were in critical care.

It is deemed unsafe for members of the public who require either elective surgery or outpatient services, along with staff, to attend hospital appointments or duties as of now.

Outpatient appointments at Ennis, Nenagh, Croom and University Maternity hospital Limerick are unaffected by this change.

A statement released yesterday by the UL Hospitals Group said: “Cancelling elective activity is an option of last resort and the Group is profoundly sorry for the impact these cancellations will have.

“Patients who are directly affected by these cancellations are being contacted by UL Hospitals Group and will be rescheduled at the earliest opportunity.”

UHL continues to experience a high capacity of emergency admissions and so far in October, there has been an average of 243 attendees to the Emergency Department on weekdays, with 190 at weekends.

Services unaffected by the cancellation announcements are:

  • Cancer Clinics
  • Rapid Access lung, prostate and breast clinics
  • Nurse led Heart Failure and Cardiac Rehab
  • Day case Angiograms
  • Acute Fracture Clinic
  • Endoscopy Clinic
  • Eye Clinic
  • ENT Clinic
  • Endocrinology Clinic
  • Dermatology Clinic
  • Vascular Laboratory Clinic

If you are required to attend any of the clinics listed above, you can attend as normal.

It was added that: “All patients who present to the Emergency Department with minor injuries at this time will be redirected to other Injury Units elsewhere, in places such as Nenagh, Ennis or St.John’s for treatment.”
