Festive spirit, cultural diversity, and community pride shine in a record-breaking celebration

Up to 70,000 people lined the streets of Limerick city centre to celebrate one of the biggest St Patrick’s Day parades in recent years. Themed ‘A More Fun Limerick’, the event drew huge crowds, creating a festive atmosphere filled with colour, music, and community spirit.

Participants gathered early at 10 am to set up and hold rehearsals for their performances. Creative Director Aidan Phelan said “We’ve been working on this for months on end, to get ready for the big day”

This year’s parade featured 78 imaginative floats, including bumblebees, monks, and Elvis Presley impersonators, delighting spectators of all ages. Emergency services participated with a striking cavalcade of flashing blue lights and sirens, highlighting their key role in community safety.

Cultural diversity was strongly represented, with local groups performing traditional dances and music, also Limerick’s Indian community danced through the streets in a colourful performance adding to the lively atmosphere. Sports clubs, including the Limerick City Special Olympics Sports Club, also took part, showcasing the city’s passion for sport.

A celebration of diversity and community

The parade began with the Army Flag and featured a special performance by the Boherbuoy Brass and Reed Band, celebrating 175 years of music-making in Limerick.

Parade-goers praised the event’s inclusivity, with attendees from various backgrounds coming together in celebration. “It was absolutely amazing! So many different cultures, so many different colours, customs, music. It was just so emotional actually to be marching with all those different people,” stated Anna.

Sergeant Gavin McDonald from Henry Street Garda Station echoed the sentiment, saying, “It was a really enjoyable day, weather was favourable. It was a fabulous mix of different cultures here today. I think everybody really enjoyed it.”

Alex, who took part in the parade, described the experience as one to remember: “The parade was fantastic today. There were so many people at it, and it was a great atmosphere.”

Parade Grand Marshal Róisín Ní Riain, Paralympian swimmer wore her recent Paris Paralympic medals, received big cheers from the crowd.

Lumen Street Theatre added a creative flourish with its medieval and monk-inspired performance.
