All AstraZeneca vaccinations in Limerick cancelled for rest of week

All AstraZeneca vaccination appointments are cancelled for the rest of this week except for those arranged for certain people over 60, according to the HSE.

“Approximately 1,200 people from Group 4 have had their appointments cancelled this Tuesday and Wednesday and, of these, we have identified just over 400 who are in the 60-69 age bracket,” a HSE spokesperson said.

“This group of patients are now being offered a vaccination appointment this Thursday, April 15th at the Radisson Blu Hotel. This is in line with the updated guidance from NIAC. We encourage this group of patients to respond to the text notification and to attend for their appointment on Thursday.”

The UL Hospital Group said that those due to attend the AstraZeneca clinic at the Radisson Blu Hotel were advised not to do so.

“The decision has meant the deferral of all vaccinations scheduled for the clinic at the Radisson Hotel today. Anyone scheduled for vaccination today is being contacted directly,” the spokesperson added.

The decision by the National National Immunisation Advisory Committee (NIAC) is to limit the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine to over 60s.

It follows concerns over potential links between the vaccine and very rare blood clots, with a number of European countries limiting its use.

AstraZeneca is expected to supply 813,000 doses to Ireland with  224,000 in April, 262,000 in May and 327,000 in June.

The UL Hospital Group apologised for the inconvenience it may cause and is in full consideration of the updated guidance.

“The HSE will advise further in terms of wider implications for the administration of the vaccination programme,” the spokesperson added.

The HSE wrote to Hospital Groups and Community Healthcare Organisations to advise that all AstraZeneca Covid-19 Vaccination Clinics planned should be cancelled in light of updated guidance received from the National Immunisation Advisory Committee and the Department of Health.

The NIAC recommendation has been made to the Government, including new advice for people who have had their first dose of AstraZeneca.
