Willie O’Dea TD voiced his concerns over the use of e-scooters in drug running
Fianna Fáil Limerick city TD, Willie O’Dea has voiced his concerns about e-scooters being used to transport drugs around Limerick city.
“I’ve seen one or two instances where I seriously suspect there was a drug deal going on judging on how everyone behaved,” said Limerick city TD, Willie O’Dea, speaking to the Limerick Voice.
“The supplier has somebody lined up to take the drugs off of them. They come in on the scooter. The deal is done very quickly. They just shoot out of the place,” he explained.
It is suspected that these e-scooters are being used to transport all sorts of drugs across Limerick. However, there are increasing concerns about the transport of crack cocaine.
“All sorts of drugs, but most recently crack cocaine. There is an epidemic of crack cocaine in town now which is extremely dangerous,” O’Dea remarked. “First of all, it causes people to become very violent very quickly, and secondly it’s hugely addictive.
Willie O’Dea concerned about the drug situation and wants laws for pursuit changed
“I’m very concerned about it,” the TD admitted. “Naturally because it has brought the drug situation to a whole new level in the city, and it’s made the guards job an awful lot harder.
“It will certainly worsen the crime situation in the city because some addicted people will do anything to get their money for their next fix.”
Regarding what needs to be done to rectify the issue – The Fianna Fáil TD’s feeling on the matter is clear.
“The laws have to be changed to allow the gardaí to engage in pursuit when they have reasonable suspicion that a crime has taken place. The law will simply have to be changed by the government in the Dáil.”
