Lough Gur Visitor Centre is the latest asset to be added to Limerick City and County Council’s Discover Limerick group, it has been announced.

Lough Gur has been a popular family attraction for years, perfect for history lovers and curious minds as they can explore wedge tombs, castles, stone forts and some of the largest and oldest stone circles in Ireland – located just 20 minutes from Limerick city.

Discover Limerick DAC was founded in 2022 and also operates the popular tourist attraction and Limerick landmark King John’s Castle.

Mayor of the City and County of Limerick, Councillor Francis Foley said of the news, “Lough Gur Development as a local community organisation have done tremendous work in this area. Over the last decade and more, they have operated Lough Gur Visitor Centre, overseen the full refurbishment of this Lakeview Centre and added many new amenities for all to enjoy.

“Their work has raised the profile of this unique location year on year leading to this point today where everyone agrees that Lough Gur Visitor Centre is ready for the next phase in its long history.”

In attendance at the ‘transfer of facilities’ event were local volunteers, counsellors and past Chairpersons of Lough Gur Development – including George Finch who, at the age of 17, was the first Chairman of the organisation over 50 years ago.

Currently in command is Eamonn Boland, who thanked all involved for playing their part in the successful transition:

“The community and staff have brought facilities a long way through determination and support from everyone involved. With Discover Limerick DAC at the helm, we are sure that the site will continue to flourish in safe hands.”

The Council’s Director of Community, Tourism and Culture, Gordon Daly added, “Tourism is a vital objective for Limerick City and County Council and the positioning now of Lough Gur within the Failte Ireland brand Ireland’s Hidden Heartlands is a great opportunity to drive success into the future.”
