Locals benefit from the expansion of the Ballysimon area

The recent opening of Lidl in Ballysimon has quickly become a significant convenience for students and the wider community living nearby.

Labour TD Conor Sheehan, a spokesperson on housing, spoke about the expansion of the Ballysimon area, “the first thing I will say is I welcome the development into this area as Castletroy is the fastest growing suburb in Munster.”

He also shared opinions on the upcoming hospital in Ballysimon which is across from the new Lidl “obviously it’s no substitute for a public functioning hospital, we really need a model 3 hospital, but I do think it’s a welcoming investment”

The store’s location offers easy access to affordable groceries to locals. Additionally, the ongoing construction of a nearby hospital is expected to further enhance services for students and residents alike.

For Niall Lavin, a student living in Brookfield, Lidl’s arrival has been a game changer.
“I think Lidl is a really great addition and It cuts down my journey a lot. The deals are great, and it’s in a perfect spot, especially with the school and the hospital being built nearby.”

Similarly, Katie Egan, who resides in Groody, highlighted how Lidl encourages students to shop smarter. “Having Lidl within walking distance makes a huge difference. Many students spend too much on takeaways or online food orders, but with a grocery store so close, more people will opt to cook at home, ultimately saving money.”

Beyond affordability, the new Lidl also offers environmental and practical benefits. Matthew Butler, a Brookfield resident, pointed out the advantages of the store’s bottle return system. “Lidl is the closest shop to me now and also the closest that does bottle returns, which is great for the environment.”

TD Sheehan also commented on how these developments are needed for surrounding residents and students to supply their services “I do also welcome the new Lidl that opened up as there is so much housing development in that area that they do need services to match”

“We need to see more investment in public transport which is the only thing that will deal with the traffic chaos in the area” voiced the first-time TD.

The combination of Lidl’s arrival and the ongoing hospital project signals a shift towards better infrastructure in the Castletroy and Ballysimon areas. These developments are making everyday life convenient, affordable, and sustainable for students and residents alike.
