A free Diabetes Screening day at Hogan’s Pharmacy aiming to provide a free test of Type 2 diabetes for people took place on Thursday, October 26.

The event was open to all adults, both diagnosed and undiagnosed, who want to get more information about the risks associated with Type 2 Diabetes and how to better manage it.

“This is one part of a national initiative organized by health-care company MSD and Diabetes Ireland,” the owner of the pharmacy, Elenora Hogan, said.

“People who are over 40 will be likely to have diabetes and it is estimated that 1 in 15 adults have diabetes,” Pharmacist Pauline Dunne said.

“The most common questions among people who have diabetes are what should they eat, when to get treatment, and how to get medical test,” Ms Dunne added.

Nicola Fullam, MSD Ireland Patient Programme Manager, hopes that this initiative can raise awareness of Type 2 Diabetes and support people to be more proactive in managing their health.

“We are delighted with the success to date and can see that the public as well as the local pharmacies participating continue to value and support this campaign,” Manager Fullam said.

About the significance of the programme, Doctor Anna Clarke, Health promotion and Research Manager, Diabetes Ireland, said that it is important for people who are empowered to take control of their health and are advised on how to realize and deal with their health condition.

“We’re delighted to continue our work with MSD on the Diabetes Screening Days, and look forward to providing the public with information in Limerick and across Ireland,” Ms Clarke said.

Marie McConn, pharmacist at Hogan’s pharmacy, said that they are delighted to be a member of Diabetes Screening days this year.
