Drivers are advised to plan safe journeys this St. Patrick’s weekend
March 13, 2025 – An Garda Síochána and the Road Safety Authority (RSA) are urging motorists to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs as St. Patrick’s weekend begins.
Drivers and road users are advised to plan ahead and arrange a safe way home if socializing. Gardaí have launched a nationwide Roads Policing Operation, running from 7 AM today until 7 AM Tuesday, March 18, with a focus on intoxicated driving, speeding, mobile phone use, and seatbelt violations.
Chief Superintendent Jane Humphries of the Garda National Roads Policing Bureau warned about the dangers of impaired driving: “This weekend will be a big social one for many people, and we are here to keep the public safe. But we need everyone’s help. Under no circumstances should you drive if you have consumed drink or drugs.”
Government commitment to road safety
Minister for Transport Darragh O’Brien T.D. emphasized the government’s efforts to reduce road fatalities, citing reduced speed limits on rural roads and mandatory roadside drug and alcohol testing for drivers involved in serious collisions.
“Road safety is a priority for this Government. We must continue working together to ensure the safety of all road users,” he said.
Minister of State Seán Canney T.D. urged drivers to think ahead: “Don’t drive intoxicated or accept a lift from someone who is. Take a moment to plan your way home and avoid dangerous driving behaviours.”
Rising road fatalities are a concern
In just 10 weeks, 33 people have died in fatal road traffic collisions across Ireland. Over the 2024 St. Patrick’s weekend, four people died and 12 were seriously injured.
The RSA’s Michael Rowland reminded drivers that intoxicated driving carries severe penalties, including fines and disqualification.
“While most drivers act responsibly, one in ten surveyed last year admitted to driving after drinking. We need everyone to make safe choices this weekend,” he said.
Public Safety Appeal:
Leave your car at home if drinking.
- Arrange alternative transport: use a designated driver, taxi, or public transport.
- Speak up if you see someone attempting to drive under the influence.
- Gardaí will conduct increased roadside checkpoints nationwide throughout the weekend.
