Limerick dog owners are being reminded that local authorities have the power to seize dogs, impose on-the-spot fines and take court proceedings against dog owners.

Limerick City and County Council’s dog wardens are stepping up patrols in Limerick’s parks and public spaces with an increased focus on dog control. They will be working alongside members of An Garda Síochána to encourage responsible dog ownership.

New signage is also being erected in public areas to highlight the importance of keeping your dog under control. The signage also highlights that restricted breeds must be muzzled, kept on a short leash and led by someone over the age of 16. Dog owners are also being reminded to clean up after their dogs with the slogan ‘Bag it, bin it’.

As of 1 October 2024, it is now illegal to import, breed, rehome or resell an XL Bully dog. Ownership of the breed without a certificate of exemption will be illegal from 1 February next year.
However, Limerick dog owners are being reminded that laws are being enforced on all owners of restricted breeds, not just on XL Bullies.

“While we seek to inform, we are also enforcing laws regarding the muzzling and leash requirements for restricted dog breeds. These measures are crucial to prevent incidents that could cause harm to people, other animals, and property. It is imperative that dog owners take personal responsibility for their pets’ actions,” said Garda Superintendent Andrew Lacey, Community Engagement Officer of Limerick City.
