Johnsgate Residents Association Wins for Transforming Urban Neighbourhood
Leading the successes for Limerick was the Johnsgate Residents Association, claiming first prize in the Urban Neighbourhood under 3000 category.
Judges noted the associations’ efforts to transform the area into a village of biodiversity, after experiencing years of neglect, dereliction and antisocial behaviour.
“This led some of the residents, led by a visionary leader to tackle issues by change, thus transforming the Village to an area of Biodiversity, cleanliness, group participation in local events.”
“All of this change was exactly as described in the presentation in the subsequent walk around where the wonderful Limerick Pipe band led the way.”
Special Award in the Inclusive Communities: Rathkeale’s Butterfly Club
Rathkeale’s Butterfly Club was also honoured with a Special Award in the Inclusive Communities category.
The Butterfly Club, established in 2003 after the town hosted a Special Olympics event, offers respite and a social network for children with special needs and their families.
The club currently provides monthly respite for 51 special needs children and their families, with approximately 70 adult volunteers and 20 student volunteers.
The judging panel said they were moved by the testimonials from “leaders, parents, and a young member of the club who spoke of the difference this facility has made to their lives” noting, “The Butterfly Club deserves special recognition” for its profound impact on the community.
Award for the Dromcollogher Care Centres and Housing for Older Persons
Dromcollogher Care Centres and Housing for Older Persons took the runner-up spot in the Age-Friendly Communities category.
The centre, established in 2002, provides temporary care for older adults in County Limerick and North Cork, with a twenty-bed residence known for its compassionate care and community-driven approach.
