Castletroy Urban Greenway receives URBACT Good Practice Label for nature-based solutions and community-led transformation, showcased among top European cities in Wrocław.
Limerick’s Go Green Routes – Castletroy Urban Greenway was one of 116 European urban initiatives awarded the URBACT Good Practice label and was invited to showcase its work at the 2025 URBACT City Festival alongside other forward-thinking cities.
The festival, which took place from April 8–10 in Wrocław, Poland, gathered 600 representatives from city administrations across Europe. It offered a platform to celebrate impactful urban projects and build partnerships for URBACT’s Transfer Networks. Further information about the event is available on the official website.
About Limerick’s Good Practice
Go Green Routes (2020–2024) was a €10.5 million international project funded by the EU Horizon 2020 Innovation Action programme. The project aimed to improve the physical and mental well-being of urban residents by reconnecting them with nature.
In Limerick, the Castletroy Urban Greenway landscape was reshaped to include wildflower-covered mounds and swales along footpaths and low points. The project also helped link fragmented suburban green spaces and introduced nature-based solutions that contributed to green infrastructure, aligned with the principles of the European Green Infrastructure Strategy.
About the URBACT Programme
The URBACT Programme supports sustainable urban development across Europe. Following an open call, 116 initiatives were selected on October 29, 2024, to receive the URBACT Good Practice label.
Each selected practice was recognised for being impactful, participatory, integrated, relevant, and transferable to other cities. These Good Practices uphold URBACT’s commitment to citizen engagement and cross-sector collaboration. The full list of awarded practices is available online >>
Community and collaboration
Carmel Lynch, Senior Executive Engineer, Environment and Climate Action at Limerick City and County Council (LCCC), expressed delight at being awarded a best practice, saying:
“We are thrilled to receive this good practice label in recognition of the Go Green Routes Horizon 2020 project, which transformed the brown site along the Castletroy Urban Greenway into a sustainable play space using nature-based solutions. We would particularly like to thank and acknowledge our national and international partners for their collaboration on the project and to recognise the role played by the community in the co-creation aspect of the project.”
