Thousands Join Global Event to Support Spinal Research and Breakthroughs in Paralysis Treatment

Last night, over a thousand runners were expected to light up the streets of Limerick for Run in the Dark, an inspiring global event supporting the quest to cure paralysis. Red armbands flashing, participants joined 25,000 others across 50 cities worldwide. The race began at the University of Limerick, with participants running or walking 5km or 10km in solidarity with people living with paralysis.

The fastest 5km time achieved in Limerick was 20 minutes and 52 seconds, while the fastest 10km time was 32 minutes and 51 seconds.

Run in the Dark was founded by Mark Pollock after losing his sight in 1998. Mark became the first blind person to race to the South Pole. Then, in 2010, a devastating fall left him paralysed. The early runs supported Mark’s recovery and his drive to fund groundbreaking spinal research. Today, Mark’s vision extends far beyond his personal journey.

Through Collaborative Cures, the charity behind the run, he’s focused on bridging the gap between scientific discoveries and real-world treatments. His team is working to shorten the timeline for breakthroughs from 50 years to 10 years by connecting scientists, investors, technologists, and regulatory experts to accelerate progress.

Last night, the runners were more than just participants – they became part of a global movement, united by Mark’s vision to transform paralysis treatment through innovation, connection, and hope.
