Over €12 million in funding has been allocated to local sports club in the city and county.

The announcement of new significant funding for local sports clubs forms part of the largest-ever investment in sports facilities nationwide.

102 Limerick sports clubs and organisations are to receive €12,145,541 in Government funding through the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme.
Minister of State with Responsibility for Sport, Thomas Byrne, has allocated the more than €12 million for Limerick sports clubs from the nationwide allocation of over €250 million.

The fund aims to improve sports facilities and boost participation levels across the country.
Included in the programme is an investment of €500,000 allocated to Grove Island Leisure Centre improvement works.

Mayor of Limerick welcomed the funds

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran, welcomed the allocations, stating, “This funding is a game-changer for the local sports clubs and communities. It will provide vital resources to enhance our sports infrastructure. It is a priority of mine that everyone in Limerick has access to top-quality facilities. The €500,000 allocated for Grove Island Leisure Centre is particularly significant as it will partly fund the €1.5 million upgrade works currently being planned by the Council for this important public amenity.”

Mayor Moran continued, “This investment is timely following the inspiring performances of our local athletes at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games and other sporting competitions over the Summer. Their achievements have brought immense pride to our community and underscore the importance of supporting and developing our sports infrastructure.”
