Man arrested in Limerick following €240k cannabis seizure in Ballysheedy

A man in his 30s was arrested after Gardaí seized a combined €540k worth of cannabis herb in connected searches in Ballysheedy in Limerick and Mallow in North Cork.

€300,000 worth of suspected cannabis herb (pending analysis) was seized by Gardaí after searching a vehicle in Mallow on Friday evening.

A follow up search in Ballysheedy was carried out by the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit saw the seizure of cannabis herb estimated to be worth €240,000.

Both of searches took place on Friday afternoon, February 23.

All the drugs seized have since been sent Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis.

After the man’s arrest he has also since been charged and appeared before a special sitting of Cork City District Court.

A Garda spokesperson said: “Gardaí have seized cannabis herb (pending analysis) with a combined value of €540,000 following searches in Co.Cork and Co.Limerick on Friday, 23rd February 2024.

“An estimated €300,000 worth of cannabis herb was seized by Gardaí in Cork following the search of a vehicle in Mallow on Friday afternoon.

“Follow up searches carried out by the Limerick Divisional Drugs Unit in Ballysheedy led to the seizure of cannabis herb valued at €240,000.

“All of the drugs seized will be sent to Forensic Science Ireland for further analysis.

“A man aged in his 30s was arrested in connection with these seizures by Gardaí.”

This follows two men being charged after €32.8 million worth of methylamphetamine – more commonly known as crystal meth – was seized in Cork.

The men were charged in Tralee District Court with what is said to be the largest crystal meth seizure in Ireland.

This is the second large cannabis seizure in Limerick in February, as earlier this month a joint operation from Revenue’s Customs Service, the Garda National Drugs and Organised Crime Bureau (GNDOCB) and the Kerry Divisional Drugs Unit saw the seizure of €1.1million worth cannabis herb.
