Legendary Irish musician Shane MacGowan is being laid to rest today in County Tipperary, after his funeral which is due to start at 3.30pm.
The singer’s funeral cortege left Dublin earlier today for a private cremation in Nenagh, where Shane lived for a brief period and had family roots.
Limerick Voice reporter, Leanne Donegan, is at the scene of the funeral, where traffic restrictions are in place and crowds are lining the streets.
“Schools and shops are starting to close ahead of the expected traffic,” Leanne updates Limerick Voice. “Sound check is starting for the musical acts such as Finbarr Furey and Glen Hansard. Seats are starting to fill up. Security and Garda presence is immense.
“Streets have been closed off such as Kenyon Street to try combat congestion. Many fans have travelled from around the globe to be here such as Spain and France. Many have brought small gifts to leave in honour of Shane and many others have worn Pogues merch.”
BBC Dublin Reporter, Aoife Moore, has posted images of MacGowan’s funeral brochure on her X feed, detailing which of the singer’s friends and family members will speak and sing at the funeral.
It’s rumoured that stars such as Brad Pitt, Bruce Springsteen, and more are attending the funeral, with President Michael D Higgins also set to attend.
