The default speed limit on rural local roads in Limerick will drop from 80 km/h to 60 km/h as part of a nationwide road safety initiative.

A new default speed limit of 60 km/h will apply to all rural local roads in Limerick City and County from Friday, February 7, 2025, as part of a nationwide effort to improve road safety.

The change follows a national speed limit review by the Department of Transport, which led to the Road Traffic Act 2024. The revised limit lowers the previous 80 km/h restriction on rural local roads and is intended to reduce road fatalities and serious injuries.

The new default will apply to all rural local roads but will not affect regional or national roads, nor roads already designated with special speed limits of 30 km/h or 50 km/h. Further reviews of speed limits are expected later in 2025 as part of an ongoing strategy to make Irish roads safer.

Drivers are urged to adhere to the new limits to help ensure the safety of all road users.
