Motorists informed of revoking fines and penalty points after faulty speed camera identified on N17
An Garda Síochána have contacted motorists to inform them that they are revoking fines and penalty points for speeding offences on the N17 in Mayo. The speeding offences were detected on a static speed safety camera system between December 20, 2024, and February 12, 2025.
1,871 speeding fixed charges were issued over this period, of which 800 were paid with penalty points applied, 123 were paid before penalty points were issued, and 948 were left unpaid.
All motorists affected by this fault will be sent a letter informing them that they will receive a refund and any penalty points will be removed where applicable.
GoSafe, the speed camera provider, and An Garda Síochána identified the issues on February 12, 2025. Chief Superintendent Roads Policing Jane Humphries spoke about these issues, explaining, “An Garda Síochána is committed to reducing road deaths and serious injuries through enforcement of speeding via a variety of speed safety cameras. The level of speeding breaches issued since the camera went operational on December 20, 2024, demonstrates the continued need for all motorists using this road to slow down.”
A GoSafe spokesperson said, “We remain steadfast in our dedication to supporting An Garda Síochána and all other road safety stakeholders with reliable, rigorously tested technology that ensures public trust in road safety measures.”
