The Purpose-Built Student Residence Has the Potential to Hold Up to 1400 Students
The project plans to develop five accommodation blocks on land fronting Groody Road and Dublin Road in Castletroy, walking distance from the University of Limerick.
It plans to include a student library, shared student spaces, laundry rooms and retail spaces.
Groody Developments Limited is seeking permission to be valid for a period of seven years. The permission is also sought for use of the accommodation, outside of student term time for short-term letting purposes.
It will include 196 bed clusters creating homes in 5 accommodation blocks ranging in height from five to eight storeys.
The plans include extensive landscaping proposals including courtyards and pedestrians and cycle walkways on a 40-acre brownfield site.
According to planning documents submitted to Limerick City and County Council, the proposed residence will address “the pressing shortage of high-quality living space for 3rd-level students.”
A survey carried out on the ongoing accommodation crisis by UL Student Life last year revealed that over 35% of all UL students still cannot find suitable accommodation and are being forced to commute long distances, stay in hotels or in cramped conditions in friends’ houses.
A decision on the proposed development is expected by the end of March this year.
