Limerick City & County Council is making significant strides in the development of Active Travel infrastructure along the R510,
As part of the ongoing project, crucial road surfacing works will be carried out overnight, starting Monday, March 3, 2025, and continuing through until Friday, April 4, 2025. The works will take place from Monday to Thursday nights, between the hours of 7pm and 4am.
During the night shifts, the existing road surface will be removed, and a fresh layer of tarmac will be applied. This resurfacing is designed to increase the strength and durability of the road, ensuring a smoother and safer experience for all road users. The upgrade will also help extend the life span of the road.
Local diversions via Father Russell Road and Church Road will be in place to facilitate the works. The Council has stated that noise monitoring will be conducted regularly to ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding area.
The decision to schedule these works during the night was made after consultations with Limerick city and County Council, the project contractor P&D Lydon, and key local stakeholders, including businesses and St. Nessan’s National School. This scheduling aims to minimize the impact on traffic during the day while prioritising the safety of both workers and road users.
Improving Active Travel and Road Safety
The project, which is in its final stages, will provide a range of key improvements, including new cycle tracks, upgraded footpaths, and enhanced crossing facilities. These upgrades are intended to make the area safer for pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users.
In addition to the infrastructure improvements, the project will also see upgrades to bus stops and side road junctions. As part of the scheme, more than 160 new trees will be planted. The landscaping efforts aim to enhance the aesthetic and environmental quality of the area.
Looking Ahead
Sean McGlynn, Senior engineer with the Active Travel Department at Limerick City & County Council, said: “This project in Raheen is approaching the final stages of its construction, with some significant work already carried out and operational, including at the front of St. Nessan’s National School. These night works, along with various road lining and signage installations, are the final key tasks to be completed to finish out the project.”
When completed, the R510 Raheen to Quinn’s Cross Active Travel Scheme will form an essential part of Limerick’s Active Travel network, connecting with the recently completed Father Russell Road Active Travel Scheme. This development is a crucial step towards improving sustainable travel options across the west of Limerick City.
The project is expected to be completed by Q2 2025.
