Chief Superintendent Derek Smart appeals for public help following several arson attacks on the south side of the city
A major Garda operation has been launched, following a series of arson attacks on the south side of the city, which have left a number of people hospitalised.
Chief Superintendent, Derek Smart confirmed to Live95 news that since October 12, a number of targeted attacks have been reported in the south side of Limerick city. The attacks included cars being set on fire and homes being “badly” damaged.
Chief Superintendent Smart said the incidents are not random and were carried out by two known groups. They’re “putting fear into people and putting lives at risk. Particularly, there’s been a number of children present in all of these attacks”
A policing plan has been put in operation since last night Wednesday 23, using both local and national resources, including the Emergency Response Unit and armed support. An investigation team has been appointed. Seven searches were carried out last night which led to the recovery of drugs, suspected firearms and other important evidence.
Chief Superintendent Smart is appealing for anyone with information to come forward as it could help with the investigation.
“You might think it’s insignificant, no matter how small they think it is, please pick up the phone let us know what you’ve seen, what you’ve heard, you can do that in a confidential manner, you’ll see our confidential numbers on the side of every patrol car around the city, or just write to us, some way.”
Anyone with information can contact Henry Street Garda Station on 061 212 400 or The Garda Confidential line on 1800 666 111.
