Record numbers presented at UHL Emergency Department

University Hospital Limerick (Limerick Voice image)
University Hospital Limerick has recorded its highest ever number of emergency department presentations

The HSE is today urging patients across the Mid-West to ‘consider all care options’, as 325 patients attended the ED at UHL yesterday, 7 October.  This is the highest number ever recorded at the hospital, which is frequently overcrowded.

Surge capacity has been opened and scheduled activity in UHL and other sites is under constant review.

UHL has yet again the highest number of patients on trolleys today, compared to every other hospital in the country.

There were 118 people on trolleys this morning, 52 of which were in the ED and 66 on wards. This is the highest number recorded since 7 August, when there were 127 people on trolleys. This is according to the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation who publish the daily figures on their website.

A spokesperson for the hospital has apologised to anyone who is ‘experiencing long waits for admission’ and says they are delivering 24/7 ‘urgent care to those who need it most’.

If you aren’t suffering from a life threatening or severe illness or injury you are being warned that you will face a significant wait.

HSE Mid-West are encouraging the public across ‘Limerick, Clare and North Tipperary to make use of all available alternatives to ED, including local pharmacies for minor ailments; family doctors and out-of-hours GP services; and the Injury Units at Ennis, Nenagh and St John’s Hospitals.’
