New restrictions are being brought in this Thursday which will see all hospitality closing their doors by midnight going forward. The cabinets decision is in response to the recent surge in Covid 19 cases in Ireland once again.
Taoiseach Michéal Martin said, “We simply have to limit the increase we are experiencing at the moment.”
There has a been an overwhelming response to this decision already from both pub users and those working in the hospitality sector.
Zara Mulcahy (21) from Limerick works in her family businesses- ‘Nancy Blakes’ and ‘Woodfield House Hotel,’ commented on this decision saying, “Christmas is our busiest time and after being closed for so long, this is going to be a huge knock to our business.”
4th year student at the University of Limerick, Jessica Lynch (21) speaks of her disappoint saying, “it felt like we were just getting our life back and now our freedom is being taken away again.”
The hospitality industry faced the harshest restrictions throughout the Covid-19 pandemic and remained under strict guidelines over the last 19 months.
The decision to reintroduce early closing times on bars and nightclubs on these premises will put additional stress on the sector over the festive period.
