A talk about her personal experience and views on the legislation
The sister of Nicole Morey who was killed by her own dogs, including an XL Bully will have an exclusive interview with Katie Hannon on RTÉ tonight.
This comes ahead of the introduction of legislation. From tomorrow, 1 October it will be illegal to breed, rehome, resell and import XL bully dogs in Ireland.
Nicole Morey´s death – the trigger for the new legislation
On 4 June 2024 on her 23rd birthday, Nicole Morey returned to her home in Fedamore when she was viciously attacked by two of her dogs – where the XL Bully was understood to be the main aggressor.
Her death prompted the introduction of the new legislation in Ireland.
Speaking ahead of her interview, Jolene Morey said she agrees with the new ban but believes it should be stricter, ‘They’re dangerous dogs. They’re not small little puppies. They’re not dogs that you could just mess around with. They can just switch in two seconds,”
A recounter of Jolene´s personal horror story
Jolene also recounted the horror of the night that Nicole died in the interview: “I was sitting in my room in darkness, and I rang Nicole because I didn’t believe it was real. Then I texted her, ‘Are you okay?’ And got no message back. And then a video got sent to me. And they asked me if it was with my sister. And I just remember clicking into a video and seeing her on the floor.”
Legislation will be expended
The legislation will be expanded early next year. From 1 February 2025, it will be illegal to own an XL Bully without a certificate of exemption. Any owner not compliant with the new regulations will have their dog seized and euthanized.
Jolene Morey will appear on ‘Upfront with Katie Hannon’ on RTÉ One at 10.35 pm tonight.
