On the anniversary of Vicky Phelan’s death, the Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour is set to arrive in the University of Limerick graduates hometown.
Today, November 14, marks the one-year anniversary of Vicky Phelan’s passing. The woman behind the surge of women advocating for their own health in Ireland and beyond, Vicky remains the face of the CervicalCheck Scandal in Ireland.
The beloved mother and wife was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2014, three years after she had received the supposed all-clear from her smear test.
Becoming an Irish healthcare campaigner during her time with cancer, following her death, legislation was introduced by Minister for Health Stephen Donnelly to make open disclosure mandatory in the healthcare system, with Donnelly commenting that this bill was brought forward as a result of Phelan.
David Brennan is the artist behind the Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour which will arrive in the University of Limerick on November 23.
Mr Brennan tells the story of Vicky’s life through the portrait, from her childhood to her adult life, including the traumatic events prior to her cancer diagnosis, and her uncovering of the CervicalCheck Scandal in 2018 and beyond. An emotionally charged experience, this portrait recounts the incredible bravery of Vicky in her fight to advocate for and protect the lives of women in Ireland.
The Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour is a campaign for “awareness and change,” according to Mr Brennan. This is what Vicky stood for and the legacy she left behind.
She strived for women to advocate for themselves, question everything, and fight for change.
In the aftermath of the CervicalCheck Scandal, Vicky fought for change in the health service and for justice for the women like her and their families. Vicky’s legacy and campaign is prominent in Brennan’s piece and will be carried through the tour.
Vicky’s family and friends are also supporting the tour.
The Vicky Phelan Campaign Tour comes to the University of Limerick on November 23.
The Vicky Phelan Portrait Tour has already toured the country extensively since January 2022 bringing Vicky’s Campaign for Awareness & Change to thousands of people so far and is fully booked up as far as 2025. The Vicky Phelan Campaign & Portrait Tour is gaining momentum, and the team of speakers and panellists is also growing as the tour continues to keep Vicky’s legacy burning bright.
