Major infrastructure boost: €150 million Adare Bypass project moves forward
Limerick City and County Council has announced the signing of the Adare Bypass Construction Contract and Design. The government, through the Department of Transport, is funding the project with approximately €150 million.
The signing took place at a reception held at the Council’s Corporate Headquarters, Merchants Quay, hosted by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran. Minister for Transport, Darragh O’Brien TD, attended the event.
“I am delighted to be signing the construction contract for the Adare Bypass, which is of strategic importance to Limerick and to the wider region,” said Minister O’Brien.
The Sisk Sorensen Joint Venture has been awarded the contract.
Project Details
The Adare Bypass (Phase 1A) is part of the larger Foynes to Limerick Road Project and will extend between new interchange junctions at Adare and Croagh, covering approximately 7 km of new motorway.
Key features include:
- Two grade-separated junctions at Adare and Croagh
- A three-span bridge crossing the River Maigue
- Four additional river bridges and multiple overpasses/underpasses
- Extensive road realignments and utility diversions (electricity, broadband, water, etc.)
- Two new railway bridges over the Foynes to Limerick railway line, built in collaboration with Iarnród Éireann
The project also involves significant earthworks, drainage improvements, and infrastructure upgrades to improve traffic flow and connectivity. It is currently scheduled for completion by June 2027.
“However, expectations should be tempered considering the scale of the project and the time remaining. Despite the work done to date the project still poses significant challenges and risks that are outside the control of the Council,” stated Mayor John Moran.
