Gardaí launch 24-hour speed enforcement operation for National Slow Down Day
Today, Wednesday, February 26, 2025, marks National Slow Down Day. This day aims to remind motorists of the dangers of speeding and increase overall compliance with speed limits nationwide.
An Garda Síochána will conduct a 24-hour national speed enforcement operation.
National #SlowDown Day also helps An Garda Síochána to deter and detect those who are intent on driving at excessive or inappropriate speed.
Already this year, there have been 24 fatalities on Irish roads in 23 fatal road traffic collisions.
Gardaí urge drivers to slow down as speeding remains a leading cause of fatal collisions
An Garda Síochána conducts a number of National #SlowDown days every year aiming to remind people of the dangers of speeding on our roads.
The consequences of speeding can be devasting, not only for the driver of a vehicle but also for other innocent people on Irish roads.
An Garda Síochána aims to remind people that the greater the speed, the greater the impact of a Road Traffic Collision.
Pedestrians hit by a car:
At 30 km/h – 1 in 10 will die
At 50 km/h – 5 in 10 will die
At 60 km/h – 9 in 10 will die
During 2024, An Garda Síochána issued over 145,000 fixed charge notices to drivers driving in excess of the speed limit, which is nearly 400 detections every day.
When motorists speed, it also reduces the potential reaction time for a driver to react to something unexpected on the road. It also increases the likelihood of a motorist losing control of their vehicle, which could lead to a serious or fatal accident.
National #SlowDown Day is supported by the Road Safety Authority.
