Who’s leading in the UL Student Life elections? Our exclusive poll reveals voter trends

Glucksman Library of the University of Limerick
Voting takes place tomorrow Thursday, March 13

The University of Limerick’s Student Life elections are set to take place tomorrow, Thursday, March 13, with candidates making their final push for votes. To gauge student sentiment ahead of the big day, Limerick Voice conducted an opinion poll on Tuesday, March 11, during the height of the campaign. The poll provided an early snapshot of who students were favouring in the race, offering insight into key frontrunners and voter priorities as the election countdown continues. Here’s what we found:

Student President

According to our poll, Síofra Foley leads the Student President race with 43.1%, with students citing her experience as a Welfare Officer and continuity as key reasons for their support. Katelyn O’Regan closely follows at 32.1%, while Gregory Shiel has 22.9% of the poll vote with some respondents mentioning their desire for a fresh approach.

Meanwhile, 1.8% opted to Re-Open Nominations (R.O.N.).

Student Welfare Officer

This one is tight—Orlagh O’Regan is slightly ahead with 45% of the poll, while Natasha Horan sits at 42.2%. 12.8% of respondents aren’t convinced by either and want to see the race reopened.

Student Academic Officer

Our poll results show a clear outcome: Jared Nadin is the overwhelming favourite for the role of Student Academic Officer, securing 71.6% of student support. As the sole candidate for the position, the remaining 28.4% indicated a preference for reopening nominations rather than voting for Jared.

Student Diversity & Inclusion Officer

Dervla Ryan has the strongest backing of any candidate in our poll, with 89.9% of respondents supporting her as the sole candidate for the role. The remaining 10.1% opted to vote to reopen nominations (R.O.N.).

Why does voter turnout tend to be low?

Most students we surveyed agree that voting in student elections matters, although some admitted they wouldn’t be casting a ballot. Our respondents felt that a common reason for low engagement is a lack of awareness—some respondents said they don’t fully understand the impact of these roles.

However, other respondents understood the importance of casting a vote, with one anonymous respondent stating, “These people will shape your university experience, so picking people who will fulfill your interests is vital.”

Unsure of who to vote for?

If you’re unsure who to vote for, tonight’s hustings offer the perfect chance to learn more. All election candidates will take part, presenting their manifestos and answering student questions. It will be hosted by Live95FM’s Head of News Gillian Devlin. The event takes place this evening, Wednesday, March 12, at 6:30 PM in Kemmy Business School (KBG12). Don’t miss the opportunity to make an informed choice!
