Restoration underway on historic Sailor’s Home after fire damage

Shannon Foynes Port confirmed that works on the Sailor’s Home property, which is located on O’Curry Street commenced works on the reinstatement of the historic property on Wednesday, February 19, 2025.

It is expected to be completed by the end of the year after the port authority finally secured a contractor to carry out the works.

The two-storey building was built in 1856-7. However, it was severely damaged in a fire early on the morning of July 1, 2023.

Assessments carried out after the fire confirmed the property was repairable, despite extensive damage.

Shannon Foynes Port company took over the property in 2012, after the building had been disused for over two decades. Although vacant for a number of years, the property hosted art exhibitions in the past.

The building is a preserved structure and was regarded as a beautiful building of its type near the city docks.
