With the general election approaching, make sure you’re registered to vote! If you’re 18 or older and reside in Ireland, you are eligible to be included in the Register of Electors.

How to register

Register online at CheckTheRegister.ie or download an application form. If you do not provide a PPS number, have your form witnessed at a Garda station. Submit your application at least 15 days before election day, not counting Sundays or public holidays, to ensure you’re registered.

Voting options

In-Person Voting Most registered voters cast their ballots in person at an official polling centre.

Postal Voting Postal voting is available for:

  • Diplomats and their spouses abroad
  • Defence force members
  • Those unable to reach polling stations due to illness, disability, or occupation
  • Students studying abroad, members of An Garda Síochána, anonymous electors, and their households

Eligible postal voters must apply in advance, typically two days before a general election dissolution or 22 days before other elections. Apply here or through your local authority.

Voting eligibility

Special List Voters: Residents of hospitals or care facilities may qualify for the special voters list. First-time applicants need a medical certificate. Apply by contacting your local authority or CheckTheRegister.ie
Student Voters: Students can register from their home or student address but not both. Those studying abroad may qualify for postal voting.
Overseas Voters: Only Irish diplomats and their spouses abroad can register to vote while overseas.

For all forms and information, visit CheckTheRegister.ie or contact your local authority.
