Taoiseach Simon Harris confirmed he is seeking a General Election for November 29, 2024

After passing the Finance Bill earlier this week by a margin of 75 votes to 55, Taoiseach Simon Harris has travelled to Áras an Uachtaráin today, November 8, to request that President Michael D Higgins dissolve the Dáil.

The request has been granted by the President. According to Irish law, an election must take place 30 days after the Dáil is dissolved.

The dissolving of the Dáil will mark the end of a nearly five-year long coalition of the Fine Gael, Fianna Fáil and Green Party government.

Speaking at Government Buildings before travelling to Áras an Uachtaráin, the Fine Gael leader called on the Irish public to act, saying: “The time is now right to ask the Irish people to give a new mandate”

Ending his speech, he urged everyone to “value your vote, use your voice.”
