English and Murphy played crucial roles in the club claiming their first ever Limerick Senior Club Hurling title
Limerick hurling have had huge success over the past seven years, with five All Ireland and six Munster titles won since 2018.
Although that success is brilliant, for club players winning a county championship means much more and that is certainly the case for Doon senior hurlers Adam English and Barry Murphy.
Doon claimed a first ever Daly Cup on Sunday with a 0-16 to 2-9 win over Na Piarsaigh who were chasing a third successive county title. English made the difference in the end with a 90-yard free in the 58th minute to seal victory.
Speaking to the Limerick Voice after the game, the young star described the feeling as “unbelievable” and paid tribute to his teammates:
“We’ve dreamed of this moment for years. The lads further out the field worked so hard, and I got the easy ball, but they did all the hard work, it was all down to them.
“We never gave them any easy scores. We did good work despite the two goals which were sucker punches, but we bounced back well from it and I’m very proud of them for that”.
English scored 0-11 in the decider and couldn’t hold back the emotion of what this meant to both him and Doon:
“This is the best day of my life without a shadow of a doubt, it means everything to our club. We’re over the moon. We’ll enjoy the next few days, make great memories and thankfully we’re a very fit team, so we’ll bounce back and get ready for Ballygunner next weekend”.
Barry Murphy played a vital role at centre back and described winning the Daly Cup as ‘special’ with his point on 44 minutes the first of three scores in a row which set the tone going into the final quarter of the game.
“Lads we went to school with, brothers, cousins, uncles all involved makes it so special in what was such an intense game and for us to only hit three wides over 60 minutes is a credit to the lads”.
Despite only having a week to prepare for a Munster quarter final meeting with Waterford champions Ballygunner, Murphy insists that they will “enjoy the next few days first” before preparation will begin in what will be another big match in this club’s recent history.
The Munster hurling quarter final against Ballygunner will take place this Sunday at 4 pm in the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick and will be shown live on TG4.
