Brave Treaty United lose out to newly crowned champions Shelbourne

Shelbourne 1-0 Treaty United

A 75th minute penalty from Shelbourne’s George Poynton handed them the league title denying Treaty United booking their place in the play-off places.

In truth Shelbourne were deserved winners missing a host of chances in the first half as the Limerick based side never really got going throughout the match.

The opening 15 minutes were very cagey with perhaps nerves playing a part with the stakes been high for both teams.

The first real chance of a poor first half came from an over head kick from Shane Farrell but was denied excellently by the away sides goalie in Tadgh Ryan.

From the save Shelbourne thought they had a penalty after Yassine En-Neyah was hauled down but the referee waved away their appeals.

Shelbourne were now in the ascendency and started to create chances at will with Farrell, George Poynton and Michael O’Connor all coming close to making the breakthrough.

Treaty United finally registered their first shot on goal in the 35th minute with Mark Walsh going close. Shelbourne finished the first half strong with Ally Gilchrist hitting the post.

That was the last real highlight of the first half, remarkably Shelbourne didn’t go in at the break in the lead.

The second half started the same as the first half with both teams afraid of making a mistaking leading to a goal. Treaty United grew into the game and produced the best chance of the game which was saved by Brendan Clarke.

The game now was there for the taking and in the 75th minute Shane Farrell was taken down in the box after Charlie Fleming tried to play out from the box.

Poynton stepped up and put the ball past Ryan to put the home side in the lead with 15 minutes to go. Shelbourne retreated in the last 10 minutes but were never in danger holding out to become champions and getting promotion back to the Premier Division.

As for Treaty United they are still in a very strong position to finish in the playoffs with three games to play.
