From Kendrick Lamar to Jalen Hurts, Taylor Swift to Patrick Mahomes; here’s our guide to the big one

America’s showpiece event takes place on Sunday as the Kansas City Chiefs and Philadelphia Eagles battle it out to be kings of the NFL, and Super Bowl champions.
Here at Limerick Voice we have put together a guide to the game from broadcasters to half time music and more!

Where can I watch?

The game is live on Virgin Media Two and Sky Sports Main Event, with coverage starting at 10pm on Sky.

The UL Vikings American Football team are also hosting a Super Bowl watch party in Flannery’s of Denmark Street. Check out @ul_vikings on Instagram if you wish to attend.

What time is kickoff?

Kickoff in every Super Bowl is at the traditional 11:30 pm Irish time, or 6:30 pm Eastern Time.

Where is it being held?

The Caesars Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana will host the game for a record 8th time, and a first since 2013.

Who is performing in the halftime show?

Rapper Kendrick Lamar will headline Apple Music Super Bowl LIX Halftime Show, just three years on from his last cameo in the show.

What about Taylor?

It wouldn’t be a Super Bowl without the queen of pop music. Taylor Swift is dating Chiefs’ tight end Travis Kelce and will be in attendance, with multiple on-screen appearances to be expected.

Key people I should know about?

Kansas City Chiefs:

Andy Reid – Chiefs head coach and offensive playcalling mastermind
Patrick Mahomes – Star Quarterback
Travis Kelce – Tight end and Taylor Swift’s boyfriend
Chris Jones & Nick Bolton – Elite defenders who will make an impact on the game
Harrison Butker – Chiefs kicker who made headlines for controversial views.

Philadelphia Eagles:

Nick Sirianni – Head coach
Jalen Hurts – Quarterback
Saquon Barkley – Star running back
AJ Brown and Devonta Smith – Wide receivers
Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell – Rookie phenom cornerbacks
Jordan Mailata – Australian rugby league player turned offensive lineman.

Past Success:

History is within reach for the Chiefs, as they look to become the league’s first three-in-a-row champions in the Super Bowl era, having defeated the Eagles and San Francisco 49ers in recent years. They also won Super Bowl LIV when they also defeated the 49ers.

For Philadelphia, this is their second trip to the big game in three years, narrowly losing to the Chiefs last time out 38-35. The franchise’s only Super Bowl victory came back in 2018 when Nick Foles inspired them to a rip roaring victory over then kingpins New England Patriots.

Chiefs season overview:

Kansas City finished the season with an impressive 15-2 record, only losing to the Buffalo Bills and Denver Broncos (in a dead rubber). The Chiefs claimed the #1 seed in the AFC, meaning a home run through the playoffs where they defeated the Houston Texans (23-14) and Buffalo Bills (32-29).

Eagles season overview:

The Eagles recovered from early losses to the Falcons and Buccaneers to finish the season with a 14-3 record, securing them the #2 seed in the NFC conference. They followed it up with three home playoff wins over the Green Bay Packers (22-10), LA Rams (28-22) and Washington Commanders (55-23).

In case you missed it:

On Friday, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell confirmed that Croke Park and Ireland will host a first ever regular season NFL game later in 2025. The Pittsburgh Steelers will be the designated home team, and are rumoured to be facing the Green Bay Packers, who’s punter Daniel Whelan hails from Wicklow
