A memorial tournament will be held in the Maguires GAA Grounds in the University of Limerick on Thursday October 12, to honor the late former gaelic football manager Liam Kearns.
The event will be hosted by the Limerick Garda Sports and Social Club in memory of the Garda members who have passed away, including the legendary coach.
The Liam Kearns Memorial Cup will get under way at 11am with the presentations and refreshments being given out at 4pm in the Terrace Bar at UL.
Kearns, who died aged 61 in March 2023, will be fondly remembered at this event for his work for the Gardai and gaelic football as he managed four senior inter county sides in his career, including Limerick.
He managed the Treaty footballers for six years, guiding them to Division 1 of the Allianz National Football League in his tenure.
He also coached Laois, Tipperary, and Offaly during his inter-county football managerial ventures as well as the UL senior footballers in the Sigerson Cup.
The legendary coach who was born in Tralee, Co. Kerry worked at the Mayorstone garda station in Limerick city and was involved in training gardai before his retirement.
The Limerick Garda Club will also be celebrating their 30th anniversary, making it a double occasion.
The Garda Siochana – Cork, Kerry and Limerick – Southern Region Facebook page said in a post that they were delighted that the GAA facilities in the University will host this tournament.
“Our tournament in memory of Liam and all our deceased colleagues goes ahead next Thursday in the Maguire Fields UL, with refreshments after in the newly refurbished Sports bar/Terrace bar on campus. All (are) welcome,” they said.
“We have legends of the day making comebacks for one day only alongside emerging stars of the future. A special thanks to the Committee of Limerick Garda Club, Garda Representative Association, Agsi (Limerick), St Pauls Garda Credit Union and Coiste Siamsa (Limerick) for contributing to this event. We hope to see you there.”
