Graeme Mulcahy has called time on his inter-county career with Limerick after 16 seasons of playing at the highest level of the game.

The 34-year-old former All-Star will be remembered fondly for his service to the Treaty County, having collected seven Munster winner’s medals, five All-Irelands and three Allianz League titles.

Mulcahy was a pivotal part of the Limerick panel which ended a 45 year wait for Liam McCarthy success as he helped John Kiely’s men to victory over Galway in the 2018 decider. He also scored the game’s opening goal in a year which saw him pick up an All-Star.

He went on to be part of the panel which would also win four in a row from 2020-2024.

In a statement released by Limerick GAA, Mulcahy expressed his gratitude to the organisation and to management, writing, “After 16 seasons, I have decided that the time is right for me to announce my retirement from inter county hurling. To have been entrusted to represent Limerick by the numerous management teams and sharing the dressing room with all my past and current team-mates has been a great honour. I leave with fantastic memories, lifelong friends and an immense pride in what we have achieved.”

He continued, “The highlight of my playing career was undoubtedly being apart of the team that ended the 45 years wait to bring the Liam McCarthy Cup back to Limerick. Coming back to the county with the Cup is something I will treasure forever. I will always be very grateful to John and his management team for allowing me to play a part in that”.

“A special thank you to my wife, Laura. You have made untold sacrifice to allow me to chase my goals and I will be forever grateful. It has made the journey extra special having you and in more recent years, our two girls Róise & Aislinn, to share in the success.”

The Limerick management team paid tribute to their stalwart:

“The Limerick Senior Hurling Management want to express our appreciation to Graeme for his 16 years of service to the Limerick Senior Hurling team.  He was a tremendous example to those around him by way of his commitment, dedication and relentless work rate on and off of the field.”

The statement continues. “Graeme wore the jersey with pride and distinction throughout his amazing career.  His leadership in the dressing room and desire to always put the team first were aspects that most never get to see but without which a team cannot be successful.”

It concludes, “Graeme leaves with a catalogue of wonderful achievements and memories that he can saviour for years to come with Laura, Róise and Aislinn.  We want to wish them the very best for the future.”
