Limerick supporters give their thoughts ahead of All-Ireland Final

Ahead of the All-Ireland final between Limerick and Waterford this Sunday we got the thoughts of three Limerick supporters on where the game will be won and lost.

Padraig O’Carroll

What are your thoughts ahead of the game?

It is a novel final pairing. I think Limerick are the better team but Waterford will pose a big threat no doubt. Galway should have beaten Kilkenny in the Leinster final and Waterford were poor in the first half. The question is are Waterford very good or did they beat a bad Kilkenny team? I feel this Waterford side are dangerous but Limerick will pose a bigger threat than Kilkenny.

Are you worried about the threat Waterford will pose?

If you put the two teams side by side I feel we (Limerick) are strong where they are strong. They have some great plaers such as (Austin) Gleeson and (Calum) Lyons. I think we can counteract their big threats. We have players that can be more of a threat to them and I feel the likes of Seamus Flanagan can do well up against guys such as Conor Prunty.

Has it been difficult not going to the games this year?

It is what it is unfortunately. I understand the rules and why we can’t go. I find that I am a nervous wreck when watching the games on the TV. For some reason I find it less stressful being at the games.

What do you make of Limerick’s form in the Championship?

I think we are in brilliant form. You need to realise that in the Munster Championship you won’t walk through all teams. Any team can beat the other on any given day. Teams are starting to learn how to play against us. This team are very good at grinding wins out and we have a 100 per cent win record in 2020. That’s a testament to John Kiely and his team.

What do Limerick need to do to win?

I think we need to score goals. Teams are capable of getting goals so if Waterford manage to find them then we will have to respond. We need big performances from our big players. Hopefully Aaron Gillane is fit while I think Declan Hannon will need a good performance at centre back.

What is your prediction for the game?

I think Limerick will win by probably two or three points. That’s what I’m hoping for anyway. It should be a great game and we hope Limerick can come out on top.

What are your thoughts ahead of the game?

I think Limerick might prove a bit too strong on Sunday. They have a great chance of winning. There is a hunger this year after the hurt of last year’s defeat in the All-Ireland semi-final to Kilkenny

Are you worried about the threat Waterford will pose?

I thought they looked very good in the last quarter against Kilkenny the last day. I don’t want to take from Waterford but I feel Kilkenny were a bit stuck in the ground during the second half. They looked very poor which Waterford deserve credit for. Any team that reaches an All-Ireland final will pose a threat but I’m hopeful we will come out on top.

Has it been difficult not going to the games this year?

Usually leading up to the final, I would be searching for tickets for the family and then I’d go looking for my mother, father and sister. In 2007, I drove to Kilkenny to get tickets off a Limerick man so it’s strange not having to scavage for tickets. The lads are probably better off not having everyone ask them for tickets. I think there is a bit less hype around with people not going. There isn’t as many Limerick flags on cars or hung up around the place.

What do you make of Limerick’s form in the Championship?

I think Limerick’s form is very good. Galway and Limerick are two really strong teams. I was worried about Galway’s threat before the semi-final. It was never a free flowing game when Limerick played Galway. I think they tried to counteract each other. I was more afraid of Galway than Waterford but I’m not taking Waterford lightly. They will pose a serious challenge.

What do Limerick need to do to win?

We need to stop Waterford scoring goals. If we do that I think we will win. We need to stop Waterford getting through. If we stop goals going in that will be a major factor. They didn’t score a goal in the Munster final and we came out on top. I feel the main players need to have big games but we are lucky to have such a strong team and great cover.

What is your prediction for the game?

I am going for a Limerick win. It is sport so anything can happen. A refereeing decision can go against you and that could cost you the game. We can’t afford to start slow. If Waterford don’t score quick we will grind it out. I think we have the experience too so I think we will just have enough to win.

Pat McGrath

What are your thoughts ahead of the game?

I’m not worried although Waterford will give it everything. I am looking forward to the match and although Limerick haven’t played as well as they can in the last two games, I feel that John Kiely will have Limerick ready to go on Sunday. Waterford have had a great season but I feel if Limerick turn up they will win.

Pat believes John Kiely deserves credit for getting the team to their second All-Ireland final in three years.

Are you worried about the threat Waterford will pose?

I was disappointed with Kilkenny in the semi-final. Waterford kept running at them and they couldn’t handle it. They were full of energy and enthusiasm. They can trouble anyone if they play like they did against Kilkenny. They have a great team and they have some great players such as Austin Gleeson, Jamie Barron, Tadhg De Burca and Shane Bennett.

Has it been difficult not going to the games this year?

Strange is the word I would use. You just have to get on with life. It’s not the end of the world but it is definitely strange.

What do you make of Limerick’s form in the Championship?

They haven’t been as impressive this year but they have done enough to win every time. They never panic though. There were times against Galway and in the Munster final where they didn’t play well for periods but they always seem to be able to keep the scoreboard ticking over and they keep the pressure on the opponents.

What do Limerick need to do to win?

They need to stop Waterford’s running threat. This Waterford side have serious pace. They have guys like Gleeson and Barron and if you give those guys space they will punish you. (Declan) Hannon needs a big game. (Kyle) Hayes and (Diarmuid) Byrnes have been fantastic. The half forward line has looked great this year and they will need to be on top form again. Galway tried to thwart (Aaron) Gillane and (Graeme) Mulcahy but other lads stood up which will need to happen again against Waterford.

What is your prediction for the game?

I don’t want to curse Limerick but I can’t see past a Limerick win by four or five points. If you place the two teams beside each other, Limerick are slightly superior. I’m 58 years of age, I went to my first Limerick game at 14 and I have never seen a team like this. This is potentially the best Limerick team since the 1940s and we should enjoy them while we can. I’m hoping they can come out on top again on Sunday.
