Local sporting heroes honoured at mayoral reception in the city

A range of sporting codes were represented in the celebrations at the Merchants Quay venue

The outstanding achievements of local sports teams who represented Limerick at the highest levels in the summer of 2024 were honoured by the Mayor of Limerick, John Moran – who hosted a memorable Mayoral Reception at Istabraq Hall in the Merchants Quay area of the city.

The event was the first of two sports-themed Mayoral Receptions this January, highlighting the dedication and talent of the athletes honoured. These receptions recognise and celebrate the contributions of local individuals, teams or groups to the community.

A range of sporting codes were represented, reflecting the diverse athletic talent within Limerick. Athletes from traditional sports like camogie and golf were honoured as well as those from adaptive sports like wheelchair hurling, and international competitions in rowing and polocrosse.

The Honourees
  • Limerick Under 16 Camogie Team: Winners of the 2024 Munster and All-Ireland U16 Camogie Championships.
  • Munster Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Team: Champions of the 2024 All-Ireland Wheelchair Hurling Camogie Championship.
  • Limerick Representatives with Rowing Ireland: Recognised for their stellar performances at the 2024 Home International and Coupe de la Jeunesse Rowing Championships.
  • Diane Moore and Sophie Quirke: Representatives of Ireland in the 2024 U16 Polocrosse Tour to England.
  • Members of Castletroy Golf Club: Celebrated for their success in the Irish Men’s Senior Cup in August 2024.
  • Team Ireland Special Olympics Representatives: Brian Lowe, Andy Coyne, Emma Griffin, and Tara Loftus, for their achievements at the Princess Charlene Invitational in Monaco.

Mayor of Limerick, John Moran expressed his admiration for the recipients, stating, “The teams we honoured this evening have shown exceptional dedication, skill, and sportsmanship with great success during the summer of 2024. They are true role models for both young and old, inspiring us all with their achievements. Their success not only brings pride to Limerick but also aligns with our vision of a more healthy Limerick, promoting physical activity, teamwork, and community spirit.

A Mayoral Reception honouring individuals who set high bars in sport in 2024 will take place on January 29th.
