Sixty second Q&A with Limerick jockey Billy Lee

Billy Lee is no stranger to most racing fans in Limerick and Limerick Voice‘s reporter Gerard Mulvihill recently sat down with the Ballingarry native for a lengthy interview in his home city.

At the tail end of their conversation Gerard asked the Grade One winning rider some quick-fire questions.

The main body of the interview will be published for our readers in the print edition of Limerick Voice in December.

What has been your favourite career victory thus far?

Definitely Fiesolana in the Matron stakes at Leopardstown. She’s the best mare I have won on – I used to just love getting up to ride as you always knew she’d give you 110 per cent.

What is your favourite Racecourse to ride?

The Curragh is probably. It’s a fair track where the best horse usually wins. Maybe in the sprints the draw will dictate a bit but usually the best horse wins. Cork is the same in that the best horse usually wins and it’s another of my favourite tracks. They are doing a new 7 furlong track there now which will hopefully give it another boost.

Who is your best mate in racing?

Wayne Lordan.

Who is the biggest joker in the weigh room?

Definitely Leigh Roche…. Or Rory Cleary; there would only be a short head between them.

Who do you travel to the racecourse with?

There would be Wayne (Lordan), Seamie Heffernan and Killian Leonard, and we sometimes get a lift off Donnacha O’Brien as well – there is plenty of us there.

Can you give me the name of one horse you are looking forward to for next season?

There is a filly there now that has only ran twice and won a Group 3 in the Curragh – Liquid Amber. Hopefully now she’s a classic filly for next year.
