The Limerick side’s quest for a maiden Sigerson Cup success goes on

TU DUBLIN 2-15 UL 2-11

It’s another year without Sigerson Cup glory for the University of Limerick as they fell to a 2-15 to 2-11 defeat away to TU Dublin in Grangegorman on Tuesday evening.

Despite two goals from full forward Sean McDonnell, Declan Brouder’s men just couldn’t stop the power and clinical finishing of their Dublin counterparts. Sean Jones impressed for TUD, finishing up a personal tally of 1-3 which included a fine individual effort just four minutes after the restart. This set his side up nicely and they never gave up their lead from that position.

Jack Lundy’s 50th minute penalty all but sealed the win for his side, despite a late fight back from the Munster opposition.

Both sides did struggle against a strong wind with a flurry of long-range kicks dropping short on numerous occasions, but it was UL who got the game’s opening score through a Cian McHale free, with Sean Jones getting his side’s opening point with nine minutes on the clock.

TU Dublin began to gain some momentum and soon found themselves with a four point lead half way through the first half, thanks to scores from Darragh McCartan, Jack Lundy and Meath’s Jordan Morris, as UL struggled to come to terms with both their own kick outs and efficiency in front of goal.

Conal Dawson and Cian McHale did their level best to reduce the gap before Sean McDonnell finished from close range in the 24th minute to give UL a two-point advantage heading toward the first half interval.

However, their lead would soon be wiped out entirely thanks to four unanswered scores from Conor Fee, Morris, Jones, and Dublin star Colm Basquel to leave the Leinster side a point ahead at the break.

Daniel Walsh’s fisted effort straight after the re-start was just the start UL needed, but he was soon given his marching orders for the next 10 minutes with a black card, thus leaving UL to fight an uphill battle with 14 men. From that moment on, it was total control from TU Dublin as Sean Hanfin, Joe Prendergast, and Jordan Morris all contributed to see out the victory and book their spot into the semi-finals ensuring that UL’s season came to a disappointing end.
