UL Senior Footballers qualify for Sigerson Cup Final after 25 year wait

University of Limerick Senior Football team have beat title holders Dublin City University for their spot in the Sigerson Cup Final for the first time since 1997.

With an full-time score of 0-14 to 0-11, UL had to draw on their qualities to knock out the defending champions.

All Star defender Eoin McLaughlin picked up an injury playing for Mayo last Sunday, putting UL on the backfoot, but stellar performances from Ciaran Donnelly (Offaly), Sean Powter (Cork), Connell Dempsey (Mayo) and Donal O Sullivan (Kerry) secured the win for UL.

UL entered the second half one point up, 0-7 to 0-6, and despite efforts by DCU, the defence by the UL team was too strong and repelled the Dubliners attack.

The second half was a close call, as to what team would come out victorious but the scores from Kerry’s David Clifford were a real turning point.

Scoring two outstanding points in the latter half of the second half of the game Clifford firmly put UL ahead and ultimately led the Limerick side to victory.

Having never won the competition before, UL hope to make more history on Wednesday, February 16 in IT Carlow where the final will be taking place at 19:30.
