Victoria Beckham’s documentary series on Netflix follows her preparations for Paris Fashion Week and her journey to breaking into the fashion world. The three-episode series has taken some heat from critics since its release and has garnered a 6.4 rating on IMDb.
Despite this critical reception, the series remains in the top 10 on Netflix this week, which raises the question of whether the criticism is justified. Her docuseries comes after her husband David Beckham’s series ‘Beckham,’ which was very well received by critics and even won an Emmy.
A lot of reports on the series commented on it being boring or seeming like an advertisement for her designer brand. This may be because the first episode follows her into her London atelier and shows the work that she and her team do on a day-to-day basis, particularly ahead of a major fashion show. It did not feel like an ad, but a behind-the-scenes of what goes into a brand of that calibre, and it was definitely necessary given the premise of the series.
Beckham also dives into the issues that she faced when trying to start her own brand, as she was not taken seriously. She disclosed that people thought she was out of her depth: “She was a pop star. She’s married to a footballer – who does she think she is?”
Victoria is no stranger to adversity, which she discusses in the series. The star details the bashing she has taken from the media over the years, being referred to as “everything from ‘porky posh’ to ‘skinny posh,’” admitting: “It’s been a lot, and that’s hard.” She even recalled a time when she was asked to step on a scale on TV in 1999, just 6 months after giving birth.
The documentary delved a lot deeper than anticipated, which made it feel inspirational. Designers such as Tom Ford, Donatella Versace, and Anna Wintour are pictured singing her praises, which is no easy feat.
For those who are not interested in fashion or 90s pop culture, this series may be a miss. But, for those who are, it was a great watch and will definitely spice up your life – or at least your living room!
