Final-year and MA journalism students at the University of Limerick are preparing for their Live TV news days, taking place on Wednesday, March 25, and Thursday, March 26.

Students will showcase the work they have put into producing TV packages over the past month.

This is part of the module “Broadcast Week”, with lecturer Fergal Quinn overseeing the students’ progress and providing them with all the tools they need to succeed.

Matt Kelly of ‘Matt Kelly Productions’ is also assisting with the project and preparing students for real-life newsrooms.

Throughout the past few weeks, students have learned the ins-and-outs of camera angles, video editing, and even vocal exercises used by industry professionals.

‘Limerick Lens’ is being produced by final year students in the Bachelor of Arts in Journalism & Digital Communication and is set to cover a wide range of topics.

Journalist Katie McNamara, along with her crew, created a news package on the new UHL site, while Saul Mezzapelle covers the inspiring story of a Limerick pub that “refused to die.”

Abigail Hayden, Desk Editor of ‘Limerick Lens’ spoke about her experience with the module.

“It’s been an amazing opportunity for us to learn about broadcast journalism and all the work that goes into it, both behind the scenes and in front of the camera.”

Also featured in the programme will be an exploration of Seachtain na Gaeilge, and how the people of Ireland can work to turn a week of celebration into year-round promotion of the Irish language.

The MA’s have named their production “From The Flagpoles,” exploring everything from Limerick’s vibrant fashion scene to updates on local and national sports.

This is overseen by Desk Editor Jackie Coffey. She shared her excitement for the project on social media.

“So far, a theme is coming out of trying to give a voice to people who have otherwise been put to the side.”
