The Limerick Voice team welcomed Áine Fitzgerald, Managing Editor of the Limerick Leader and Limerick Live, to the University of Limerick this week ahead of the launch of the 2026 Limerick Voice newspaper.

As the Limerick Leader’s first female editor and a journalist with over two decades of experience in Limerick media, Fitzgerald shared valuable insight into the realities of modern newsrooms and the skills needed to thrive in an evolving industry.

Having begun her own career on placement with the Limerick Leader during her third year of college, Fitzgerald reflected on how her early experience shaped her approach to journalism. “Be ready to multitask, it’s never just the one product,” she advised. “You need to be flexible and on your feet.”

Limerick Voice Editor-in-Chief Conor Curran thanked Aine for taking the time to speak with the team, “Aine’s expertise really helped us refine our vision for the newspaper and we’re incredibly grateful.”

He also discussed the team’s creative vision for the upcoming edition, noting that the paper will celebrate the city’s heritage, “with the Celtic revival, we would love to have a section as Gaeilge.”

Limerick Voice’s Deputy Editor Conor O’Mahony said: “Today definitely made myself and Conor Curran’s job more difficult in the best way possible. Deciding which stories will make the newspaper, with Aine’s advice, has given me a clearer idea on how the paper will be laid out and what the individual sections will look like.”

The team collectively pitched over 60 possible stories that could be brought to print in February.

This year will be the 19th edition of the publication, and is projected to be a 40-page newspaper, published and distributed along with the Limerick Leader newspaper.

With planning now well underway, the Limerick Voice team will continue developing stories and features for the upcoming issue, set to launch in February 2026.
